Pyramids and more – STT101

The two largest pyramids at Giza under a cloudy sky

The pyramids of Khufu and Khefre under dramatic skies at Giza

An exciting day! Visit some of Egypt’s most important Old Kingdom sites and see the last remaining of the Wonders of the Ancient World.

Memphis was the ancient capital of Egypt from which the first pharaohs ruled and although little remains you can see the awesome fallen colossal statue of Ramesses II as well as a beautifully intact alabaster sphinx of Queen Hatshepsut and other granite relics in the open air museum.

Visit Saqqara, site of the step pyramid of King Djoser (Zoser). Designed by his architect Imhotep, this pyramid is considered the forerunner of the true (smooth-sided) pyramids. This site is still being excavated with new finds being made constantly.

The pyramids and Sphinx at Giza are a “must see” for all visitors to Egypt. An engineering marvel, the Great Pyramid is the only one remaining of the Seven Wonders of the ancient World. The three main pyramids, of Khufu (the Great Pyramid, Cheops), Khefre and Menkaura – grandfather, father and son – are accompanied by smaller pyramids and mastabas of queens, family, friends and servants of the pharaohs. The remains of mortuary temples can also be found at the site. As well, the small Museum houses the incredibly intact Solar Boat of the dead pharaoh, which was buried at the foot of the pyramid.

The inscrutable Sphinx has the body of a lion and the face of a pharaoh; some say originally the face of King Khafra. However, other archaeologists say the Sphinx is much older than this, so its origins are really shrouded in mystery. Unfortunately the face of the Sphinx has been damaged but it is still a powerful and awesome sight.

As well you can do a little shopping at the perfume factory, where you can see delicate glass bottles being made and sample exotic perfume oils. You can even get the essential oils for your favourite French perfume.

Things to note
•All of these sites have uneven surfaces and sensible footwear is advised. Care should also be taken when accessing the sites.
•Sunscreen, a hat and water are important. Most of our drivers have cold water on board that you can purchase at a small price.
•There are souvenir salesmen at all sites, be polite but firm if you are not interested in purchasing. Ask your guide for assistance if necessary.
•A visit inside the pyramid is not an easy matter. Down and then back up a low-roofed, steeply sloping and narrow corridor you will find this very hot and not easy as you will be bent over and pushing past people going in the opposite direction. Definitely not for the claustrophobic and you need good knees and back. The burial chamber you access will be empty. However, if you are fit enough and really interested don’t be talked out of it – it will make a great talking point when you get home. Tell your guide that you wish to enter the pyramid so that they can get your ticket early as only a limited number of people are allowed inside each day.
•If required, wheelchair accessibility should be discussed when booking. A vehicle with wheelchair accessibility can be made available but the pyramids site in particular is not easy with a chair. Saqqara has some slatted wooden walkways over the sand and Memphis is reasonably straight forward.
•Don’t forget your camera!!! Bring a spare battery and card – you’ll take lots of pictures to remember this extraordinary day.
•We’d really like your feedback so please let us know what you think of all aspects of your tour.
