Fine arts

Cairo has a vibrant arts scene that also has a long history. You can find many arts museums, quite a number of which are dedicated to a single artist. The Cairo Opera House is also a strong centre for the performing arts and music, while smaller cultural centres such as the El Sawry Culture Wheel and a number of restored old houses in Islamic Cairo host a wide variety of performances and exhibitions. Add to that the private galleries which display a wide range of contemporary artists (and offer their work for sale) and you can understand how you can spend a day and more exploring the rich fabric of the arts in Cairo.

Tapestry from Wissa Wassef

A section of a beautiful hand woven tapestry from Wissa Wassef.

On your tour today you will visit the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre. The Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre is the home of a unique experiment in tapestry weaving that has produced extraordinary works admired and collected by museums and galleries around the world. The life work of its founder, Ramses Wissa Wassef (1911-1974), was dedicated to releasing the innate creativity of young Egyptian villagers freed from the constraints of a formal education. If we visit at the right time you can see the young weavers of today at their work.

Egyptian Modern Art Museum

We will also visit the complex at the Cairo Opera House, and the Museum of Egyptian Modern Art. The most extensive theme within the Museum is the display of paintings depicting Egyptian life and its history. So this is an opportunity to not only experience the art history of Egypt but also see and perhaps better understand Egyptian life and culture.

You will also visit one or two other art museums, dependent upon time and what is open on the day. Choices will be made between Mahmoud Mukhtar Museum, Museum of Mohamed Nagy, Museum of Islamic Art, Museum of Effat Nagy and Saad Al- Khadem, the Ahmed Shawqi Museum, the Institute of Applied Arts at Bayt el Sennari, Darb 1718, El Sawy Culture Wheel or perhaps a trip further afield to the Abd el Rahman el Nashar and Zeinab al Segeeny Museum. If you are not visiting Old Coptic Cairo then you may prefer to visit the Coptic Museum or perhaps the Museum of Islamic Art.

– There are souvenir salesmen everywhere in Egypt and bazaar shop owners can be insistent; be polite but firm if you are not interested in purchasing. Ask your guide for assistance if necessary.
